Week 5
We learned how to animate simple animations in After Effects.

Instructions

Exercise 1 (10%)
Kinetic Typography

Exercise 2 (5%)
Animation Chart

Exercise 3 (5%)
Vector/Character Animation

Task

Exercise 1: Kinetic Typography (10%)

For the first exercise of Project 2, we had to create an animation that combined motion and typography to create a lyric video. This was done in our assigned groups and we could pick any song of our choice as long as it had lyrics.

My group decided on "Luther" by Kendrick Lamar ft. SZA as our song and we split up the lyrics evenly to animate. I was assigned with the second verse. Our leader Nicole selected the font and hex codes so that we would all be on the same page with how the aesthetic would be.

I started  by creating a new file and I followed one of the tutorials given by my group mate.

My process can mostly be summed up by creating a text layer, adding keyframes, motion blur and parenting the text to a null shape to move it around. After doing all of that, I ended up with this:

After that, our group leader helped us compile all our videos into one single lyric video.

Exercise 2: Animation Chart (5%)

For this exercise, we were assigned different types of graphs to animate and I was assigned with a donut chart. I followed the step-by-step video tutorial posted by Dr Mike. Creating it had the same process as the previous exercise (adding keyframes and adjusting the timing of the animation) but this time with a shape instead of text.

Exercise 3: Vector/Character Animation (5%)

We learned how to animate a simple office graphic during class so I applied what I learned to this exercise.

Fig 1.6, Vector Animation (5/3/26)

It mostly consisted of the same things as the chart animation which was resizing the artwork in Adobe Illustrator, grouping the layers and renaming them and then importing it into Adobe After Effects to add keyframes and change the position/rotation etc.

Reflection

I've always found animation a little tedious but following tutorials and learning how to use After Effects didn't feel as tedious as I thought it would. Overall, I learned a lot about animating motion graphics.
