Task
In this assignment, we had to explore various writing styles and identify a
selected writing style that we liked then write
"o l e d s n c h t i g , . ! #" in that style
and digitize them in Adobe Illustrator. After that we would make an A4 poster
with our own font.
Letter Dissection:
We had to dissect the letters "H o g b" in a font of our choice. I
picked the font Bodoni Std.

Fig 1.3, Letter Dissection "g" (4/11/24)
Fig 1.4, Letter Dissection "b" (4/11/24)
While dissecting, I noticed one thing in common with the lowercase letters,
it was that the circles seen weren't perfect circles as I initially thought.
For the letter "H" it was pretty straightforward as it was uniformed and
symmetrical.
Sketch:
Now, we had to use three different marker pens with a width of 3.0mm and
above to sketch out three different writing styles with the letters.

Now we had to explore further and pick the writing style we liked the
most and write "o l e d s n c h t i g , . ! #" in that style.

Digitization:

I started off with establishing the guidelines following the video
tutorial given by Mr Vinod and then digitizing my type design
sketch.

4. Fontlab:
We were then asked to import our font into Fontlab.

Fig 2.7 Kerning (10/12/24)
At first I named my font "cube" as it has a cubic shape but then chose to
rename it to "pixel" as I feel it gives off video game vibes.
5. A4 Poster:
Next, we had to create an A4 poster using the font we designed.
Fig 2.8 Poster Process (15/12/24)
It was a little tough as we had to use all the letters and symbols we
designed but after some trial and error, I managed to come up with a
sentence.

Feedback
Week 8:
(Independent Learning Week)
Week 11:
General Feedback- Mr Vinod assigning us the Fontlab part of our task.
Week 13:
General Feedback- Mr Vinod quality checked all of our work and explained when our final class would be.
Reflection
Experience:
Creating typefaces was an extremely tedious task and I found myself dreading to use Fontlab as I was very inexperienced with the UI and kerning. However, after all the grinding, it's nice to see the fruits of all the time spent, your own personal font.
Observation:
Each font has been carefully crafted and designed down to the smallest of details. Even something as simple as Times New Roman or something hated as Comic Sans have thought put into them. Furthermore, designing a legible font is no easy task.
Findings:
I've come to appreciate fonts more as I now have experience with creating one myself. As I create more fonts, I hope to improve my font-making skills.
