Task 1: Exercise - Vormator Challenge

The first task we had was to create a character using various the various shapes given to us. However,  we weren't allowed to distort the shapes in ways like stretching so techniques such as overlapping, flipping and rotating shapes was used.

Research

Fig 1.1

From this information given by the lecturer, I had an idea to craft a character using a triangular shape. I wanted my character to have a wide base like the right-most example in Fig 1.1.

Sketches

After figuring out what shape I wanted my character to go for, I starting drawing some rough ideas and tried a hand at illustrating it in Adobe Illustrator using the shapes given.

Digitalization

Fig 1.3

I had some trouble trying to make my character triangular shaped as the shapes given weren't as hard-edged as I thought they would be. I still made due and tried my best to create a gnome-looking character, although I think he ended up looking more rectangular which is fine as well. We were only allowed to use three colours for this silhouette so I opted for browns which helps make the character look like it has human skin.

REFLECTION

I think learning how to use Adobe Illustrator was quite challenging as I'm not a tech savvy person. On top of that, managing my time and assignments for these first few weeks was pretty stressful as I had other events to attend and classes simultaneously. Other than that, I think this task was pretty fun and a good learning experience for me on how to use Adobe Illustrator and shape characters I have in mind.
